Anche Doug williams non e' andato male:

Williams had taken a rather unconventional route to the Super Bowl. He began his career as the first round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978. After five seasons, a contract dispute caused him to leave the team and sign with the Oklahoma Outlaws of the newly formed USFL. When that league folded a few years later, Williams found himself out of a job until Redskins coach Joe Gibbs asked him to join the team to be the backup for quarterback Jay Schroeder. Williams played just one game in 1986, and spent most of the 1987 season on the bench. But injuries and inconsistent play from Schroeder made Gibbs promote Williams to starting quarterback.

Williams had played extremely well in his five regular season games, passing for 1,156 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Redskins main receiving threat was wide receiver Gary Clark, who caught 56 passes for 1,066 yards, an average of 19 yards per catch. Wide receivers Ricky Sanders and Art Monk were also deep threats, combining for 80 receptions and 1,130 yards. Running back George Rogers was Washington's leading rusher with 613 yards. However, Rogers saw limited action in Super Bowl XXII due to injuries that would force him into early retirement. Rookie running back Timmy Smith started in his place. Fullback Kelvin Bryant also was a big contributor, rushing for 406 yards, and catching 43 passes for 490 yards during the 1987 season.

Simms si rompe il piede in week 15 contro Buffalo ed è out for the season, subentra il baffone che in 7 stagioni da back-up ha lanciato in totale ben 109 volte: W @ Ari, W @ NE nelle due finali di regular season. Playoff: W vs Chi al Divisional, W @ SF al Championship, W vs Buf al Super Bowl.

Frank Reich invece e' uno di quei backup (l'unico ?) che si e' sempre fatto trovare pronto nel momento del bisogno, scrivendo anche un pezzo di storia NFL, ma che non e' mai stato titolare per molto

Reich was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round (57th overall) in the 1985 NFL Draft. The Bills already had drafted future Hall of Famer Jim Kelly in 1983 and when Kelly signed with the Bills in 1986, Reich was relegated to the backup role. Reich got his first start when Kelly went down with a shoulder injury in 1989. Reich led the Bills to two straight victories. He rallied the Bills in the fourth quarter by throwing two drives down the field for a 23-20 victory over the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Rams. This first game for Reich occurred in front of a Rich Stadium crowd of 76,231 and a Monday Night Football audience. Reich returned the following season, however, when Kelly was injured again late in the season. Reich provided the Bills with two key wins , clinching them the AFC East title and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Reich is one of a handful of quarterbacks who is undefeated as a starter in post-season play, but he is the only one with more than one start to his credit.

On January 3, 1993, Reich led the Bills on a 38-3 run in the second half and overtime against the Houston Oilers en route to a 41-38 victory, the largest comeback in NFL history. Reich would help the Bills defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round with a score of 23-7 before once again giving the team back to Kelly, who led them into Super Bowl XXVII, where they fell to the Dallas Cowboys 52-17

Bè, non troppo. Se uno è il backup ad agosto lo è anche ad ottobre, non è che in quei due mesi diventa improvvisamente un fenomeno.

Si', ma se uno inizia a fare il titolare a stagione iniziata, gioca "five regular season games" e poi ti vince il Super Bowl, penso abbia una storia piu' interessante riguardo al "subentrare al titolare"

Comunque il caso Brady testimonia che il contesto in cui viene messo un QB è importantissimo. Perchè i Brady, Rodgers, Brees e Manning ti fanno fare lo step successivo, però messi in condizione di non sbagliare anche dei QB mediocri possono far bene. Quell'anno di Cassell, ma anche l'inizio carriera di Sanchez.

Beh, a Indianapolis l'anno in cui Manning saltò la stagione non andò proprio di grazia.. è tutto abbastanza relativo direi..

in merito a K.Warner, direi che il premio gli spetta di diritto anche se un soffia davanti a Brady se parliamo di un singolo anno..

In 1998, Kurt Warner was signed by the Rams and was sent to NFL Europe. In 1999, he was brought in as the backup to Trent Green. But when Green was injured in the third preseason game, Warner had to step in.

No one gave the Rams a shot with a 28-year-old quarterback who had never taken a snap in the NFL. But Warner and the Rams surprised everyone with their “Greatest Show On Turf.” It took Warner no time to get acclimated to the system. He became the first quarterback to throw for 3 touchdowns in each of his first three NFL games.

Warner won the NFL MVP that year as he threw for 4,353 yards and 41 touchdowns. In Super Bowl XXXIV, Warner threw for a Super Bowl record 414 yards as the Rams beat the Titans, 23-16, and Warner was named the MVP.
