It rarely happened to me to read a more ignorant article in my life than the one below. First of all, the statement "we are not a democracy, as most people are taught, but a republic" is completely false and does not make any sense. If the
author of the article had spent more time educating herself (as she invites to do us in her piece) she would know that republicanism is a form of state, while democracy is a form of government. The United States is both a republic and a democracy. The two are not mutually exclusive. Secondly, and more importantly, the lightness that she uses to talk about a potential (yet Constitutionally impossible) secession is horrifying. She seems to not quite realize the full extent of what she is saying. Because if she did, she would undertand that by doing that she is insulting the historical memory of this country and that of all the people who died and suffered during the Civil War. She writes: "The Civil War only happened because the northern states didn't allow the southern states to secede". Oh TELL ME ABOUT IT! Maybe we should just go ahead and call it the "War against Northern Aggression"... Plus, I would suggest the author to go see how much money states likes Mississippi receive in federal aids and how much tax revenue they make. If she did that she would quickly realize that these states would politically and economically die within one year from such phantomatic secession. And so all the individuals in those states who rely on welfare to survive. Oh yeah, last but not least: it's unconstitutional! Just a friendly advice: there are plenty of good history courses at Appalachian: take advantage of them."
