One day after being named to the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game, Red Sox third base prospect Will Middlebrooks learned that he will not be able to play in that showcase game or in the rest of the AFL season. The third baseman injured his left thumb in a Scottsdale Scorpions game on Monday, jamming it into a tarp while chasing a foul ball.

He left the AFL to fly to Boston, where his injury was examined by Red Sox doctors, who determined that he had suffered a sprain. He was put in a cast for the next four to six weeks. While the injury will end his AFL season, however, it is not expected to impact his offseason preparation for spring training.

Middlebrooks was replaced on the Rising Stars roster by Diamondbacks third baseman Ryan Wheeler. In 13 games in the AFL, Middlebrooks hit .250 with a .300 OBP, .518 slugging mark and .818 OPS along with four homers for the Scottsdale Scorpions, including a .389/.421/.778/1.199 line in 19 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers.

The Red Sox have let go strength and conditioning coach Dave Page and assistant trainer Greg Barajas, according to multiple sources.
Page had been with the organization since 2006, serving as the strength and conditioning coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks for the six seasons prior to joining the Red Sox.
A native of Malden, Page grew up in Portland, Maine before graduating from the University of Southern Maine in 1989. He was named Professional Baseball Strength Coach of the Year in '07.
Barajas spent 12 seasons as a minor-league trainer before being promoted to the major league staff prior to the '10 season. He was named International League Athletic Trainer of the Year with with the Pawtucket Red Sox in '07.

Oggi Page intervistato da WEEI. Molto interessante quello che dice.
Quattro giocatori - uno starter (Lackey?), un everyday player (Crawford?) e due rilievi (Bard? Albers?) - hanno in pratica mollato. Non si sono preparati come dovevano per la parte finale della stagione. I nomi tra parentesi li ho messi io, Page non ha fatto nomi.

The one thing that kind of highlights some things is when Curt Young, his dad died, they put Gary Tuck on the bench to be the pitching coach for a few days. So, they asked me to go to the bullpen. So, I'm out there and I get a chance to watch the whole game.
"In the first six innings of a couple of games -- and this was a Yankee game I was out there -- the first six innings, we hit 18 balls in play. [Of the] 18 outs that we made, seven times the guy who hit the ball never made it to first base -- peeled off before he got to the bag. I said something to the other coaches. I said, 'We're just not playing hard.' That trickles down a lot of places. It can manifest itself in a lot of different ways. It really kind of opened my eyes to maybe what was going to lie ahead in the next six weeks."

Gli altri ci possono stare, Crawford direi di no. Era sotto i SUOI standard, ma di certo non sotto agli standard di una squadra MLB, soprattutto non una con Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis e David Ortiz, per dirne 3, soprattutto Gonzalez che si è lamentato persino della fatica di giocare un day game dopo un night game. Poi magari era proprio lui, chissà, ma sparare così nel mucchio non aiuta e bisogna ricordare che il mese peggiore di Crawford sia stato il primo. Lackey ed Albers sembrano due certezze, mentre Bard... boh, uno vale l'altro nel bullpen, tranne Aceves e Papelbon direi.
