New England Patriots president Jonathan Kraft, in an interview on The Big Show, said that Patriots coach Bill Belichick will remain in charge of the team for "the foreseeable future." While he declined to get into specifics of the coach's contract, Kraft made clear that the Patriots have no intention of moving away from a man whom he called the best coach in NFL history.
"We don’t really talk about the term of Bill’s contract, but I think it’s safe to say that Bill is going to be the coach of the Patriots for the foreseeable future. I think we’re very fortunate to have him," said Kraft. "I think he’s the greatest coach in the history of the game. In this modern era where you have free agency and you have all the hurdles associated of having sustained excellence on the field, it’s very difficult. He’s exceptional at managing the roster, the X’s and O’s, and all the personality issues that go into managing a football team and coaching staff.
"We’re very fortunate to have him, and I think you’ll see him coaching the Patriots for a number of years into the future."
Kraft also touched on several additional topics during the interview. Among them:
--Kraft expressed optimism that Wes Welker would remain with the Pats well beyond the life of his current contract, which expires after this year.
"We’re so lucky to have him. Dealing with players coming up is something we deal with every year," said Kraft. "Wes is somebody that we hope and believe will be a Patriot hopefully for the rest of his career but at least a while to come after this year."
--He said that the team has no regrets about signing Chad Ochocinco, whom he thinks will grow as a contributor as the season progresses.
"We knew it would take time, and I believe that by the time the season is over, we’re going to see a lot of Chad out on the field that will make people happy," said Kraft.
--He spoke highly of Albert Haynesworth, suggesting that the defensive lineman has lived up to everything that he promised when he met with Jonathan and Robert Kraft prior to signing, both on and off the field. Kraft said that Haynesworth has had "a huge impact on the game."
--Kraft said that one of Belichick's strengths as a coach was to manage the transition of locker room leadership to sustain the right culture around the team.
