I Giants (107-W) a casa, i Dodgers (106-W) a casa, Tampa (100-W) a casa, Milwaukee (95-W) a casa.

Restano Houston (95-W) e Atlanta (88-W).

Per la terza volta nella storia si sfiora la WS tra Braves e Red Sox dopo il 1914 ed il 1948 e per la terza volta i Sox mancano l'appuntamento per poco. E potremmo aggiungere pure il 1999. Anche se le ALCS finirono 4-1.
I Cardinals, gli Yankees e aggiungerei Toronto erano tutte lì e nessuno mi farà mai credere che una di queste diventando improvvisamente calda (gli Yankees e i Cards hanno fatto delle strisce in cui erano imbattibili) non potrebbe essere al posto di Astros e Braves.

E così saranno i ragazzi di Dusty contro le perle di Joc.

Come si fa a non essere romantici nel baseball (cit.)?

Ammetto che i Braves degli anni d'oro, quelli che vincevano per quattordici volte di fila la division, quelli con quella fantastica rotazione quelli che forse hanno vinto troppo poco alla fine non riscuotessero proprio tutte le mie simpatie.

Ma con gli anni il mio atteggiamento verso questa franchigia è cambiato.
Insomma, io farò il tifo per loro in queste WS.

Si è spento venerdì a centoun’anni Roger Angell.
Probabilmente il migliore scrittore di baseball, ma non scriveva solo di baseball, di sempre.

Un piccolo estratto di un articolo scritto dopo la sesta partita delle World Series del 1975, quella citata anche in Good Will Hunting (Robin Williams e Matt Damon). Quella di Carlton Fisk, per intenderci, quello della foto in bianco e nero in alto a sinistra.

Un ragionamento che in effetti si estende da quella famosa partita alla passione per lo sport e per le nostre squadre.

What I do know is that this belonging and caring is what our games are all about: this is what we come for. It is foolish and childish, on the face of it, to affiliate ourselves with anything so insignificant and patently contrived and commercially exploitative as a professional sports team, and the amused superiority and icy scorn that the non-fan directs at the sports nut (I know this look — I know it by heart) is understandable and almost unanswerable. Almost.

What is left out of this calculation, it seems to me, is the business of caring — caring deeply and passionately, really caring — which is a capacity or an emotion that has almost gone out of our lives. And so it seems possible that we have come to a time when it no longer matters so much what the caring is about, how frail or foolish is the object of that concern, as long as the feeling itself can be saved. Naïveté — the infantile and ignoble joy that sends a grown man or woman to dancing and shouting with joy in the middle of the night over the haphazardous flight of a distant ball — seems a small price to pay for such a gift.
