"According to a report in Südostschweiz, former San Jose Shark Devin Setoguchi may be headed to the NLA to play for HC Davos this season.

The former NHLer is said to have bested some alcohol problems that have chased him the last couple of years and was given an invite to Toronto Maple Leafs training camp, but was unable to turn that tryout into a contract.

Setoguchi is a veteran of 471 NHL games split between the Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames. His game has taken a dip after leaving the Sharks, unable to rekindle the magic of his sophomore season in 2008-09, when he scored 31 goals and 65 points. He also played a big game in the 2010 and 2011 playoffs where he scored nine points in 15 games and 10 points in 18 games, respectively.

Part of the reason Setoguchi is considering Davos, where there is not yet a contract in place, according to the report, is that former teammate Joe Thornton played two seasons with Davos during the last two NHL lockouts.

If Setoguchi winds up signing a deal and getting there in a hurry, he could find himself not only playing in the NLA, but participating in the CHL tournament, which resumes its round of 32 on Tuesday with HC Davos taking on IFK Helsinki. Davos lost their first match against Helsinki 2-1 in Helsinki."

until Tuesday? I think the deadline is like 90 minutes from now. And as of now you only posted that article, that seems to only mention a possibilty

Now that i have confirmation, I would like to set Setoguchi as retired/signed overseas.

I would like to point out that before any official confirmation of buyout, i said to "hold off on any action, and do not proceed with buyout" on my above post


and to respond to BURE:


1) Since i said to "HOLD OFF" on the buyout request, that means to not proceed with it. And now that i have confirmation he's retired/signed overseas, that is what i would like to set him as, here is proof Setoguchi signed in europe:

As HC Davos' head coach Arno Del Curto tells journalist Dino Kessler (Blick), Devin Setoguchi has indeed signed with HC Davos. The now former NHL forward will already be in Davos tomorrow.


2) i didn't miss any deadline, today is October 5th. Kachlex said (after me asking him) that the deadline to set retired/overseas is October 7th. Even if you like, you can go back in this same thread and look at Snipeshow setting players retired after October 5. I posted right after the request to HOLD OFF ON THE BUYOUT request, and to stand-by until i get confirmation of his retirement/signing in europe. Nothing official was done as i was told to "WAIT until Oct 7th"

3) unfortunately, i work during Pacific Standard Time from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and can't fulfill italian timezones. If exceptions can be made in the draft, i don't see why the same exceptions can be made in regards to other deadlines, as I can't stay up till 3am

5) if you're still going to be difficult about it, then whatever, at least the player is gone, one way or another. Like you said there, there has been no precedent for this situation.

october 5th (Monday - h: 24.00 CET)
Deadline to set the starting roster (main roster and farm team) on the league site and to make requests to set players as retired/signed overseas and be able to get them off the cap. Please note that right after this deadline roster moves will start counting against the limit and eligible players will be again exposed to waivers.

To me the request is on time. It's borderline, like Voynov. Hard to decide but i think a decision will be made on time.

you seem to confuse buyouts and signing overseas deadlines..

Commission allowed both Voynov and Setogouchi to be set as retired. Data will be updated on stanleit.com.

lol, you announced his buyout, what you did the following day doesn't change that.
The fact we allowed overseas status despite that simply means that we decided to make off-season buyout decisions reversable till the deadline to set players as retired.
