Darren Sharper has just been charged with 2 counts of rape in Los Angeles ... along with a slew of other criminal charges ... TMZ Sports has learned.

We broke the story ... the former New Orleans Saints superstar was arrested in L.A. on January 17 on suspicion of raping two women in L.A. hotels -- one in October 2013, one in January 2014.

Sharper adamantly denied the allegations ... claiming he never raped anyone.

After his arrest, Sharper said he did have a sexual encounter with one of his accusers after meeting her at a nightclub, but claims it was completely consensual.

As for the other woman ... at the time of his denial, Sharper said he had no idea who was making the accusation and says it's BS.
